Mac OS X: Viruses and Security

Todd Woodward of Symantec has written an thoughtful and pretty balanced piece on the state of Mac security He states the basics facts that there are no current Mac OS X file infecting viruses but that, while the Mac is an inherently safer platform than current versions of Windows, no system is immune. It is sometime difficult to avoid being smug when discussing security and Mac. But we will get viruses someday. It is good to remember that.

This kind of piece is what I like to see, thoughtful and informed, unlike the FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) that some security “experts” spread. But then it must be difficult making a living writing Mac AV software or acting as a security consultant. That’s no excuse for deliberately misleading the unsuspecting, of course, but I try to remember their position when I get angry with the fear and loathing that sometime arises in security discussions.
