If you open the preferences, you will see that you do have a choice of fonts - anything that is in your font folder. You can also change text and background color so if green on black is just a bit to retro-tech you can go for something boring like black on white, or black on very light gray for easier on the eyes lower contrast.

As for a scroll bar, its there at the edge of your writing area, but hidden until your mouse sits on top of it. Its not a standard OS X scroll bar, but it's size is proportionate to the size of your document (like any OS X scroll bar).

My two gripes are the inability to control top and bottom margins separately, and saving as .txt to a folder in your application support folder. If it will open a rtf, why cant it save to an rtf. Also, give me limited access to font styles so I can do bolds, italic and different size fonts for headings - it would would just make things easier to read.
